Nike Air Jordan 5 "Shanghai Shen" Sneaker

Erroneously linked at first as a tribute to Michael Jordan old Emsley A. Laney High School, the Air Jordan 5 “Shanghai Shen” actually celebrates Shanghai’s unique standing. Known to many as the “Pearl of the Orient” or “Paris of the East,” this vibrant coast city also went by an older designation of “Shen,” one which prominently displayed in yellow on AJ5’s lateral side. In reference to the city itself, where modernity seamlessly intersects with traditions, Jordan Brand designers actualized the concept by keeping the upper in the classic black nubuck, while adding a splash of non-conventionalism in the forms of teal light blue and bold yellow to the shoe’s midsole. Elaborating on symbolism once again, the color blue represents Shanghai’s dependance on water as a port city. Yellow, in the meantime, signifies Huangpu District and the culturally important Luwan neighborhood within it.
